Change and re-invention are usually never easy. And yet, with the right attitude, community, and resources we can learn to thrive in our new normal.
The last 2 months have had their share of ups and downs, with wrist injuries on both hands due to a freak accident, which has left me in constant pain or discomfort. Although I have a pretty cool splint on my right hand (which looks like a Bionic Arm 😀) it has been quite the adjustment, with more months of recovery to go. Thank god for voice to text!
As I was feeling a bit sorry for myself, the lovely Yana Fry messaged about my interview from a few months ago. It reminded me of why I do what I do – keeping people, families, and organisations safer, healthier, and happier online – and that this was a temporary setback.
Watching the interview also reminded me of how much I have overcome in the last 15 years – from arriving in Singapore as a “trailing spouse” in 2008 with little to no job prospects, getting my NUS scholarship in 2009, and completing my PhD when my children were 7 and 2.
I also opened up about my journey of the last 5 years – unexpectedly finding myself as a divorcee at 40, my journey as a single parent (which is one of the reasons I focus on #cyberparenting), and setting up my company CyberCognizanz to fuel my passion of cybersecurity and cyber safety awareness.
I wasn’t ready to share the interview earlier but am ready now, because:
1. It’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and I want to urge people to take their hashtag#onlinesecurity, hashtag#safety and hashtag#wellbeing more seriously. This has never been more important, and this is more than just a job for me.
2. For anyone who has been in similar situations or is going through a low phase, I’d like to say: There’s always light at the end of the tunnel – just believe that and it will get you through.
The more recent learning is that the light always starts and shines from within 🌟
Thank you Yana for encouraging me and others to tell our #singapore stories.
Happy Friday everyone!
