The right to #privacy and #datasecurity are crucial, especially in the digital society and economy that we live and work in. This is why the Indian Digital Personal Data Protection Bill (2022), which will beĀ tabled in the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament, is so significant. Although several sticky points remain, the Bill puts India on the right side of the global trend towards data protection legislation.
While the DPDP Bill is often spoken in terms of the #digitaleconomy, #datalocalisation, and cross-border #dataflows – and these are also discussed in my conversation with Ramita Iyer – I focused on its implications for #onlinesafety and #cybersecurity. Some topics covered include:
– the role and responsibility of companies (especially #socialmedia companies) in safeguarding personal data
– the need for greater #cybersecurityawareness at various levels
– impacts of the move away from excessive data localisation
Thank you Ramita, Harpreet, and Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS-NUS) for the conversation, and Nachiket Midha for the research support.
